What We Mean When We Say Strategy-Led Creative

We want to make the thing that could only ever belong to you.

That’s the work.

Eight years into ENC, I think I’ve become more obsessed with that idea than ever.

The magic isn’t just making something beautiful. It’s getting so damn close to the guts of a business that when the creative finally shows up, it feels almost obvious.

Of course that’s what it looks like.
Of course that’s what it sounds like.
Of course that’s the story.
Of course that’s them.

That’s what we mean when we say strategy-led creative. We get curious before we get precious.

We ask a LOT of questions. The obvious ones. The uncomfortable ones. The ones that send a founder down a 20-minute tangent and accidentally uncover the entire reason the brand should exist.

Who are we really talking to?

What are they craving?

What do you believe that your competitors don’t?

What are we trying to make someone feel?

Where is this business going, not just where is it today?

What is already working that deserves to be protected?

What is so undeniably true about this thing that we can build an entire world around it?

There it is.

That’s usually where the good stuff starts. And once we find it, strategy doesn’t get tucked into a deck while creative takes over.

It gets louder.

It becomes the sentence.

The typeface.

The weird crop.

The founder video shot on an iPhone.

The button on the website.

The campaign idea we cannot stop talking about.

The thing we decide not to make.

The tiny detail that might never show up on a KPI report but makes someone think, holy shit, I love this brand.

Because strategy, to us, isn’t the serious part before the creative part.

Strategy is what gives the creative somewhere to go.

It gives us the confidence to play harder. To get weirder. To know when to polish something within an inch of its life and when to leave the damn thing alone.

It turns a collection of beautiful things into a brand that has a pulse.

And eight years later, I think that’s the part of this work I love most.

We get to sit across from a founder with a brain full of ideas, a business full of potential and usually about 47 things they’re trying to say at once.

We get to find the thread.

Pull it.

Build around it.

And eventually create something that feels so unmistakably them that it’s hard to imagine it ever looking or sounding any other way.

That’s strategy-led creative.

Find the truth.
Build the world.
Make it impossible to mistake for anyone else.
